Loud shirts and flavoursome wines. Four generations of Osborns have trod the boards at the famous McLaren Vale winery of d’Arenberg. That’s a lot of d’Arenberg Shiraz between current day and 1912 when Joseph Osborn bought his first 25 hectares of vineyards on a rise in the hills of McLaren Vale. Little would Joseph know that his early forays into the Australian wine region, would spur on the some 65-plus labels that now sit under the name of d’Arenberg Wines. Fourth generation winemaker and proprietor of d’Arenberg wines is the charismatic Chester Osborn. Under the watchful eye of his father d’Arry Osbon, Chester has continued the family legacy first named d’Arenberg in 1943. Chester took over the winemaking duties in 1984, and has been instrumental in returning the family vineyards to more traditional viticulture practices, including the use of no fertiliser and irrigation, growing grapes using ‘minimal intervention’, while continuing the traditional, small batch winemaking that has made d’Arenberg wines the household name it is today.
